Antique 1914 Patented Sad Iron Trivet or Heat Diffuser for Stove-Heated Flat Irons

Antique stamped steel trivet or heat diffuser patented June 16, 1914 and June 30, 1914, designed for use with a “sad iron,” the heavy solid cast iron clothes irons that were heated directly on a wood, coal, or gas stove before electric irons became common. The two spring-separated steel plates create an insulating air gap to help protect tables and ironing surfaces from the hot iron. This original example shows over 100 years of honest age with patina, scattered oxidation, scratches, and normal wear. One edge of the lower plate has a slight inward bend but remains solid. An excellent piece for collectors of antique laundry equipment, early household technology, living history displays, primitive home furnishings, or vintage home décor.
